Newly-appointed head coach Mike McGraw led the #17 Seminoles to victory against Auburn University this past Saturday afternoon. McGraw, a Philadelphia native and Elizabethtown grad, was promoted to lead role after the team’s mutual decision to part ways with former coach Patrick Teubner. FSU was able to edge the Tigers 10-7 in Tallahassee.
After falling behind 1-0 early, senior Davis Goodman notched two quick ones for the guys in garnet and gold. Freshman Reid Smith was able to find net just before the end of the first quarter, putting the Seminoles ahead 3-1 after one frame.
Goodman and Smith continued their tear in the second quarter, combining for an additional three goals. The Seminole defense allowed just two on their end. The scoreboard read 6-3 at the half, in favor of Florida State.
Max Adams and Tanner Krul found a groove at the X in the second half. The two specialists were a dominant force, going 12 for 17 on the day.
Goodman found the back of the net once again to open the second half but the Tigers struck back, making the score 7-4 with just over eight minutes to go in the third quarter. Sophomores Kyle Wooten and Quinn Lowdermilk scored back-to-back goals to close out the third frame, putting the Noles up 9-4 entering the last quarter.
Smith opened the fourth quarter scoring, giving him a hatrick on the day and extending the Noles’ lead 10-4. The Tiger offense managed to score the final three goals of the contest. The scoreboard read 10-7 as the game clock expired.
FSU received strong defensive efforts from their poles, John Moschella, Evan Oakley, Corey Sherman, and Matt Molle. The four defenseman combined for 8 ground balls on the day. Senior Anthony Cicio registered 13 saves while junior Steven Grove added one, as well.
The Seminoles improved to 6-3 this season and are currently ranked #17 in the MCLA Coaches Poll powered by Under Armor. The Auburn Tigers fell to 4-4 on the year. Florida State looks to keep the momentum rolling this Friday night in their second divisional matchup. The Seminoles will travel to Orlando to take on the UCF Knights at 6pm.
