Team Up Speak Up – Change the Concussion Culture

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 3.8 million concussions occur in the United States each year. Unfortunately, by some estimates, only 1 of 6 concussions are actually diagnosed.

US Lacrosse and the Concussion Legacy Foundation want to change that statistic.

The Team Up Speak Up campaign is committed to changing the culture surrounding concussions in sports by having all athletes take on the responsibility of reporting to a team leader if they suspect a teammate may have a concussion. It’s about looking out for each other.

All coaches are encouraged to give a simple speech to their players reminding them of the responsibility to speak up on behalf of a teammate.  That’s what Cathy Reese of the University of Maryland is doing.

“We’re always looking out for each other. That’s what sports are all about,” Reese said. “We always have each other’s back.”

Players and coaches who make the commitment to Speak Up are encouraged to take the online pledge to signify that you will be doing your part.

The US Lacrosse Team Up Speak Up Day is March 1, 2018. We hope all coaches will give the talk to their team on this day or as close to this day as possible.
